Overview
Founded in 1852, The Mount Sinai Hospital is one of the country's oldest and largest voluntary teaching hospitals. Mount Sinai is internationally acclaimed for excellence in clinical care, education, and scientific research in nearly every aspect of medicine. Mount Sinai's 1,171-bed tertiary-care teaching hospital with a medical staff of nearly 1,800 provides physicians who deliver the most advanced and compassionate inpatient and outpatient care. Located at 98th Street and Madison Avenue, The Mount Sinai Hospital serves Manhattan's Upper East Side and Harlem.

Facilities & Resources
Mount Sinai's state-of-the-art facilities include the unique Guggenheim Pavilion, the first hospital designed by internationally renowned architect I.M. Pei. Here, the most advanced scientific tools for diagnosis and treatment join an uplifting ambiance that uses natural light and space to keep patients' spirits bright and promote healing.

A waiting room for family and friends of hospitalized patients is available in the Pavilion. Patients who are accessing out-patient services and families of patients may choose to stay at Mount Sinai's Guest Residence Hotel, located directly across from the hospital.

Patient's Representatives help with problems and concerns that other staff are unable to resolve. They also provide information regarding patients' rights along with hospital policy and procedures.

Additional resources for patients and their families include international services, interpreters, library, cafeteria and gift shop.

Patient Care
The Mount Sinai Hospital provides an extensive network of primary care, ambulatory specialty care, psychiatric care and rehabilitation services both on the Mount Sinai campus and out patient treatment in the community.

One of Mount Sinai's most successful innovations has been its approach to caring for patients with similar needs. forming what we call Care Centers. Through this model of care, each patient is assured a dedicated team of professionals built around a primary nurse and an attending physician. Support services are provided just steps away from the point of care.

A Care Center is designed to focus medical, nursing, social work, rehabilitation and other health services and resources on the treatment and care of patients with similar medical problems.

The hospital is recognized for excellence in numerous specialties that include the Wiener Cardiovascular Institiute which provides care for those at risk for heart disease and those who suffer from acute cardiac illness. The Cardiothoracic Surgery Center boasts one of the most renowned teams of surgeons with expertise in mitral valve repair and coronary bypass surgery. The Recanti/Miller Transplantation Institute is known nationwide, providing combined organ transplants. Mount Sinai was the site of the first liver transplant surgery in the state of New York and the Institute performs more living-donor liver transplants than any other hospital in the country.
